Picture: Rich Matheson
Jia-Ling Hsu, born and lives in Taipei, is a performance artist, actor, and film director. Hsu earned her BFA degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, focusing on performance and film-making. Embedded with memories and dreams, Hsu’s works are emotional responses to personal experiences regarding family, belief and romance, and explore the relationship between “freedom” and “constraint.” By assembling multiple materials such as body, text, object, sound, lighting and architectural space, Hsu’s works transform the unspeakable into an intimate touch of mind. The narrative is ambiguous and the audience is encouraged to share his/her interpretation in an open discussion that keeps her works nourished. Hsu is the recipient of “Cultural Exchange with Artist in Residence Grants” by Ministry of Culture of Taiwan and had her art residency in Hangar, Barcelona in 2015. Recent works include Scent of Sweetness, Still here, A way for the ambivalence, Washing off, and I want to make a garden, or be one; performing works include Retrospective by French choreographer Xavier Le Roy in Taipei Biennial 2016.
